This weekend, I was fortunate to see Disney's "The Princess and the Frog." There was so much hype at Spelman because Princess Tiana was Disney's first BLACK princess (if you don't count Nala from Lion King). I, myself was appalled and a little embarassed when my friend Whitney announced that she would not support the movie in any way, shape or form. I didn't understand at first, but now I have no doubts at all that she was right in her decision.

Go ahead and laugh, it was my initial response as well. But after you’re little chuckle, take a deep breath and grasp the deeper meaning of this seemingly light status. Take a look outside Atl-iens. It’s freezing and the rain hasn’t stopped all morning. 1. Homegirl CLEARLY lied. 2. Or maybe she just wasn’t aware that it was raining. Yeah, there’s a 3rd possibilty, but we’ll get into that a little later. 1. I feel horrible for this…but I think I’m actually beginning to adapt to the concept of lying. I’m not blaming it completely on college, but it seems like that’s the biggest reason why. People lie about where they’re from, who they are, who they know, and what they do, just to recieve artificial acceptance from their peers. I feel like if home girl in the status was lying, she shouldn’t be condemned. That would obviously be hypocritical. And frankly, unless you’re allergic to dihygrogen oxide, there was no harm in her lie. It’s still unnecessary and unappreciated, but I feel as though we are so quick to point the finger at the obvious. The real harm lies in the hands of the deciever who can mask all of his aspersions and make them seem real. I’ve witnessed more of those situations since I arrived on August 15th. Just be rational. 2. Ignorance is bliss. Oblivion is a protector. This lady probably failed to even notice the rain or the cold outside. She didn’t seem bothered by it, because to her, it didn’t exist. Many times I’ve transformed emotionally detrimental problems into non-existent ones. I refuse to see the mess around me. I am oblivious to pain, because I’ve never allowed myself to feel it. For a while, my defense mechanism had a near 100% success rate; everything was always ‘nice weather’. But we must expose ourselves. Living in a bubble full of germ-free purified air is indeed a way of preventing swine flu. but step outside that bubble and your immune system screwed. It’s time to introduce our minds and souls to hurt and confusion. Sounds stupid, but it’s better than sounding stupid. 3. This lady knew it was raining, and she didn’t lie, either. Rain and cold were never obstacles, because the bigger picture meant warm weather and sun in May. People dwell. It’s a natural weakness for us. Relationships, bad work days, and low-self esteem are triggers for the mind blocker. But is it worth it? What does dwelling help you accomplish? Dwelling= doomed swelling. A swelling of our minds with unattractive situations and outcomes that becomes so consuming that we can no longer escape the thoughts. I know it’s a lot to take in. But a little rain and 40 degrees with wind chill only affects the entire picture if you allow it to. Don’t.“I was in walmart and this woman said the weather is nice..bitch its cold and raining!!“
